Basic Italian

This isn’t a language class, but students will be taught enough Italian to get by and to ask and answer simple questions (yes, this may show up on the test!).

WEEK ONE: Basic Greetings

Professore/Professoressa — a high-school or university teacher
Dottore/Dottoressa — an undergraduate college degree holder, but not necessarily the holder of a Ph.D
Studente/studentessa
Signore/Signora/Signorina
Buongiorno
Buona sera
Buona notte (usually said before going to bed)
Ciao
Arriverderci/arrivederla (-ci if you’re saying good-bye to a group, -la if you’re saying goodbye to one person)
A domani
Mi scusi: excuse me
Grazie: thank you
Per favore: please
Prego: you’re welcome  (used in many situations as a generically polite phrase)
Mi dispiace: I’m sorry
Si/no

Come si chiama? Mi chiamo [your name].
Piacere: Nice to meet you (a pleasure)
Come sta? Molto bene, grazie … abbastanza bene … cosi cosi … non c’e male … male
Quanti anni ha? Ho [#] anni.
Di dov’e?/Di dove sei? — Sono di America/California

WEEK TWO: More Basic Phrases

Non parlo italiano — I don’t speak Italian
Parla l’inglese? — Do you speak English?

Capisco — I understand
Non capisco — I don’t understand

Mi piace (I like) – Non mi piace (I don’t like) — Mi piace gelato!
Bello/a: beautiful/handsome — che bello!
Brutto/a: Ugly/rude — che brutto!

Dov’e? – where is…? — Dov’e il bagno? Dov’e un ristorante? Dov’e una farmacia?

Quanto? – how much? — Quanto costa? – how much does it cost?
Questa cosa – that thing (quanto costa questa cosa? Non mi piace questa cosa!)

Caro: Expensive — e troppo caro! It’s too expensive!
Economico: Inexpensive

Lo prendo! I’ll take it!

WEEK THREE: Days

lunedi – martedi – mercoledi – giovedi – venerdi – sabato – domenica

Oggi: today
Domani: tomorrow
Ieri: yesterday
Dopo domani: The day after tomorrow

Chiuso: closed

WEEK FOUR: Eating

Ho fame: I’m hungry (I have hunger)
Ho sete: I’m thirsty (I have thirst)

acqua (minerale, naturale, con gassosa, senza gassosa)
caffe: usually means espresso, not “American” coffee!
Coca: Coke
Te: tea – te freddo: iced tea
Ghiaccio: ice (most drinks aren’t served with ice)
Latte: milk
Latte magro: lowfat milk (literally, “thin” milk)
Latte scremato: nonfat milk (literally, milk without cream)
Zucchero: sugar
Artificial sweetener: dolcificante artificiale (you may get looked at as though you were crazy)

Bottiglia: bottle
Bicchiere: glass
Tazza: cup

Freddo: cold
Caldo: hot

Con: with (un cappucino con latte magro, per favore)
Senza: without (una bottiglia di acqua minerale senza gassosa, per favore)

Prenotazione: Reservation (just in case you need to make one for a restaurant)
